Sunday Traditions

Sundays on the Cape Flats meant getting ready for church and/or preparing for the much anticipated Sunday family lunch.  There was not much time for breakfast but there was always time for a tasty Koesiester.
Not to be confused with the traditional Koeksister; the Koesiester or Koe'sister is both sweet and spicy. The sugary coating and sprinkling of coconut is what Sunday mornings are made of.  It was the Sunday Tradition. Still clad in our Pj's, ice-cream tub under the arm and our money clinched tightly we marched down the road to get our  breakfast....The smell of aniseed and cinnamon mixed with sweet sugary syrup was our GPS to the Koesiester Aunty's place.

Moving from the Flats to the Suburbs meant that there were no Aunties selling these yummy treats.  It was just not something that was available in the Suburbs, especially the Northern Suburbs.
Have we outgrown the Sunday morning Koesiester run?

Apparently not.  My mom started making her own Koesiesters because a Sunday without a Koesiester would be like a Sunday without roast chicken (another Cape Flats tradition)  We soon realised that there were others seeking the same Sunday breakfast and after much deliberation and plenty of pressure from neighbours and friends....KOESIESTER SUNDAY was born.

We became the AUNTIES.

Now sugar and spice fills our kitchen. Used ice-cream tubs and even Tupperware lined up on the counter waiting to be filled....chatter and laughs with customers turned friends ....that has become OUR Sunday Tradition.
